Nitrous Oxide Q & A

What is nitrous oxide?

Nitrous oxide or laughing gas is a breathable compound that the team at Flanders Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics can administer to make patients more relaxed and calm during their dental procedures.

Dentists have been using nitrous oxide as a form of sedation dentistry for over 100 years, and it can be an incredibly useful tool in giving necessary dental care to patients who are otherwise inhibited by dental anxiety or the inability to sit still for long periods of time. It’s particularly useful for more involved procedures, such as extractions, crowns, or root canals.

As a conscious sedative, nitrous oxide keeps your child remain in a state of calm without putting them to sleep, so they can communicate with the dentist throughout the procedure.

Unlike local anesthesia, it doesn’t numb any sensations, so your child still needs to be anesthetized for certain procedures.

How do you administer nitrous oxide?

Nitrous oxide is delivered through a small mask that fits over your child’s nose. The dentist instructs your child to breathe through their nose throughout the procedure in order to ingest the gas, which has a faint but sweet smell.

The sedative takes about five minutes to begin working, at which point your child will feel markedly more calm, comfortable, and happy. Some children even get the giggles. The mask remains on your child’s face throughout the entire procedure.

After your child is finished with their procedure, their dentist pumps pure oxygen into the mask for about 5-10 minutes. Breathing oxygen helps to flush the nitrous oxide from your child’s system.

The effects of laughing gas wear off almost immediately and don’t produce any noticeable aftereffects, so there’s no downtime or recovery period.

Is nitrous oxide safe for my child?

Nitrous oxide is very safe and has been effectively used in dentistry for over a century. It’s the mildest form of dental sedation and has little to no effect on the brain, kidneys, liver, lungs, or heart.

Nitrous oxide is also an incredibly effective tool in getting your child comfortable at the dentist. Many patients become generally more comfortable with the dental experience after positive exposure to it, and over time, your child might no longer need nitrous oxide to get through dental procedures.
